A short history of how Help A Child Australia came to be — and the convictions that guide our work today.
In the mid 1980s Help A Child Australia (HACA) began in Tasmania in response to desperate need amongst the poor in Southern and Central India. In December 2012 HACA was officially registered with the Australian Government's ACNC.
HACA is an independent Christian not-for-profit organisation that keeps overheads as low as possible in order that 100% of funds received is sent where it is needed most — to children in crisis.
What we believe
We believe all people are image-bearers of the living God, and our faith inspires us to reach out to children in need. We believe in the integrity and worth of every human being — especially those oppressed by poverty and injustice — and it is our desire to see them achieve their full human potential.
The context we work in
In our areas of operation there remains large-scale food insecurity. Weather events, pestilence, erosion and lack of arable land are contributing factors. Underemployment or unemployment brings families into crisis due to widespread alcoholism amongst parents. Cultural factors such as early marriage and the caste system exacerbate the intensity of grinding poverty, severely affecting vulnerable children.
